Clickmarks Introduces Re:ACT!™,
an Add-on Service for Wireless Carriers
New Offering for Web-Enabled Phones
Lets Users Retrieve Stored Notes
and Send Short Messages, Generating
Incremental Revenue for Carriers
through Increased Airtime and SMS
Message Fees
FREMONT, CALIFORNIA - July 31,
2001
Clickmarks, a leading provider
of wireless software infrastructure
and products, today announced a
new revenue-generating application
for wireless carriers called Re:ACT!
that allows users of Web-enabled
phones to store notes, send text
messages using the Short Message
Service (SMS) protocol, set time-based
alerts, and access the provider’s
location services for maps, driving
directions and nearby facilities.
The solution gives carriers a simple
means of building lucrative SMS
message traffic, earning fees for
each message sent and received as
well as for each alert received.
Carriers also reap the benefits
of airtime charges incurred every
time a subscriber logs on to the
network to set an alert, edit or
delete notes, or use the location
services. Additional revenue can
be generated by charging subscribers
for the option of adding Re:ACT!
to their wireless service package.
With Re:ACT!,
wireless subscribers can instantly
act on and react to information
by:
- Capturing
information from their e-mail,
personal calendars or the Internet,
sending it to the carrier’s
server from either their desktop
or mobile phone, and instantly
accessing it from the road. The
service can be used for storing
phone numbers, addresses, meeting
reminders, sales calls, social
dates, or other short notes that
may be needed while users are
in transit, as well as for bookmarking
sites with information such as
stock quotes and airline schedules
for on-the-fly updates.
- Sending
brief text messages to multiple
friends or associates simultaneously
from either their phone or PC,
utilizing the provider’s
SMS system. This makes fast work
of sending reminders (“Don’t
forget our 7:30 breakfast meeting”),
staying in touch (“I’m
at Lisa’s”), or advising
others of a change in plans (“Restaurant
closed; let’s meet at the
deli down the street”).
For users, this offers an attractive
alternative to alphanumeric paging
or making multiple phone calls
to deliver the same message.
- Accessing
location information from the
provider’s database,
including maps, driving directions,
and a list of restaurants, banks
or other facilities near any location
in the user’s library of
notes or bookmarks. The “Find
Nearby” function is particularly
useful for business travelers
working in unfamiliar territory.
It can also help users make alternative
arrangements in the event the
restaurant where they planned
to meet friends or colleagues
is too crowded or the movie they
wanted to see is sold out.
Users can also set alerts that
will trigger a ring or a beep
at a specific time, or reach any
number entered in their system
with one-touch dialing.
“With the intense competition
in the wireless industry, carriers
are constantly in need of strategies
to differentiate themselves, increase
revenue, and reduce subscriber churn,”
said John Huyett, President and
Chief Executive Officer of Clickmarks.
“Our new Re:ACT!
product can help wireless service
providers achieve all of these objectives
by making it possible to offer a
service that will be highly appealing
to both consumer and business users
and also exploit the potential of
SMS messages for creating a profitable
new revenue stream.”
Text messaging via SMS now accounts
for more than 16 billion messages
in Europe and other markets outside
the U.S. every month. This represents
a sixteenfold increase since 1999
and a fivefold growth in a single
year, creating substantial financial
returns for wireless carriers servicing
those markets. With average fees
equivalent to 10 cents per message,
SMS services are currently generating
$160 million monthly for international
carriers.
The Re:ACT!
application is easy to install,
easy to administer, and scalable
to wireless subscriber bases of
any size. On the server side, system
requirements include Oracle 8.1
and a Java Server Pages-based Apache
1.3.12 or Tomcat 3.2.1 application
server. On the client side, the
program is fully compatible with
HDML and WML phones and Windows
98, 2000 and NT desktops. End users
can download a client module to
their desktop for easy right-click
or button-based access to Re:ACT!
functions, or they can access the
application from the carrier’s
server via the Web.
