The patented Transcoding and Rendering
Engine (TRE) technology provides
the ability to display content to,
and receive input from any device,
from WAP phones, iMode devices,
to PDAs, pagers, and regular desktop
computers. The TRE enables the following:
- Detecting device types and
capabilities.
- Transcoding arbitrary HTML/XML
for display on the target device.
- Building and rendering a customized
user interface for different device
types. The TRE takes as input
an XML description of the UI,
and generates the appropriate
output for the target device.
- Optimizing the output for device
characteristics such as screen
size and input modes.
- Taking care of device-specific
size limitations on the amount
of data the device is able to
receive and or display.
- Taking care of differences
between browser implementations
for a given mark-up language,
e.g. Nokia's WML browser vs. Ericsson's
WML browser.
- Rendering characters as images
to display them on devices that
do not support those characters.
For example, displaying Japanese
text on an English phone.
- Image transcoding, including
reducing the size and color content
of images to fit them onto small
devices like phones.
